THANK YOU!!!
When MarketPlace Handwork of India contacted me to collaborate on a giveaway I can not tell you how excited I was. If you’ve been reading made-to-travel for a bit you know this is exactly the kind of company I want to know and shop from!
The kind folks at MarketPlace had me choose an item of clothing to style AND they are generously gifting a made-to-travel reader (that is YOU) with $100 to MarketPlace! Details will be below!
The Spring Green Samita Top is the item I chose to style. Note of fit: I ordered a size 1w, about 2-3 sizes up from my normal because I had a feeling the shoulder detail would make for a gorgeous off the shoulder blouse :).
Because I’m so stoked on this partnership with MarketPlace I wanted to show you the many ways I will be wearing this top while telling you about all the goodness of MarketPlace.
“MarketPlace is an innovative fair trade, not-for-profit organization which combines the experience of running a business with a variety of support programs designed to effect real, meaningful, and lasting change in the lives of low-income women in India.”
Style 1: Girls Night Out!
“Since MarketPlace began in 1986, women who were formerly unemployed, ‘unemployable’ or desperately underemployed have been building new lives around rewarding work, educational opportunities and social support.”
“MarketPlace is well recognized in the Fair Trade Movement and was one of the founding members of the Fair Trade Federation and is a member of the International Federation for Fair Trade.”
“Leadership By Design” sums up our strategy. Planning and controlling every aspect of production has given women basic skills that they use in planning other aspects of their lives… taking initiatives in community actions, their children’s schools, and changing relationships between them and their husbands and children, especially their daughters.”
Style 2: Ready for Work!
“(MarketPlace) work(s) with 480 artisans who are organized into 14 independent co-operatives which produce high-quality women’s apparel and home decor. Being in charge of their own businesses, the women learn valuable skills and are able to earn a living and support their families.
In addition, programs offer educational and enrichment opportunities designed to help the artisans overcome personal, cultural and financial obstacles.”
Style 3: Lazy Sunday
“Empowered with independence and self-confidence, these women become agents of change. And they find the courage, with the support of their cooperative members, to fight for what they believe in.”
All quotes taken from MarketPlace Handwork of India Press handout and “Our Mission” page.
Seriously how amazing is MarketPlace Handwork of India?!?! If you want to read more about their effectiveness I encourage you to read their Artisan Cooperatives area; you can see how the individual cooperatives are growing and what goals they have. It’s really incredible and inspiring.
