Smile File-My New Tattoo and Thoughts on Giving

Hello friends, I told you I really wanted a tattoo from Shel Silverstein’s The Giving Tree (post here) because my brother played the Giving Tree in grammar school and the memory of my mama and aunt making his costume out of poster board has really stuck with me  all these years. Well, I got it!

I looooove my new tattoo.  The story of The Giving Tree is a beautiful one of love, generosity without limits, time and kindness. It actually still makes me choke up now when reading it. I think this image summarizes the whole story kind of perfectly.

My new tattoo got me thinking about giving and how lucky I am. There are so many people in this world who are struggling to just survive and so if you are in a position to give, even if it’s just a little bit, know that you are blessed.

So friends, have you ever thought of giving as a privilege? What do you think? I related my Giving Tree tattoo to K’Naan’s song “Take a Minute” over at Madison’s blog Fashion Tales; check the post out here.

Big thank you to Chris from Evil Ink Tattoo in Oakland, California. It was a pleasure being tattooed by you while you were in town.

Its great to see an original tattoo and I love that book. My mom used to read that to us often; I also tear-up when I read it. The story is so simple and profound. I often think of giving as a privilege and honor. Just by being Americans we are rich beyond measure compared to most of the world and it is so easy to over-look that.

I do think it is a gift to give, because I get so much back in return. One of life mottos is, “I am blessed to be a blessing.”

I love your new tattoo! It is beautiful and has such amazing meaning behind it!!

I love it! I remember you taking about this a while back. I wasn’t sure which element from the story you would go with and now seeing it, I love this idea so much better than what I had pictured. I really like that you chose just the tree stump in the end. So cute and really touching! Its so funny how a children’s story can evoke so much emotion! This is a great way to be reminded of this powerful message everyday!

Cute tattoo and I love the Giving Tree story! It’s always been a favorite of mine. And yes, I definitely think that giving is a great privilege to have and should be done whenever possible. 🙂 great post.

I love your tattoo, love Shel Silverstein and I love YOU! And I loved reading the story behind it on Madison’s blog post. You’re such a special girl and you really have a way of making everyone around you (even through all the invisible wires of the internet) feel special, too. (:

This is such a great idea. I love it when tattoos are meaningful and aren’t just done because they look “cool.”

Love it! I hate when people get tattoos that don’t have any meaning or because they got drunk lmao. Tattoos are supposed to mean something to you and tell a story. Like yours 🙂

I love hearing more about this and I am so glad you did a post. People seem to either love or hate tattoos. I love them. Love them even more when they have personal meaning- no way you’d ever tire of this because it will always be special to you. I’ll have to send you some pics or be brave and do a post when I get mine redone (next week!!). I am going to attempt a Klimt painting, which has so much meaning for me. Fingers crossed! I am a little nervous but your post reinforces why I want to get it done in the first place.
