National Disability Mentoring Day falls on October 19th and I have an exciting project to share with you! But first let’s talk about what exactly is National Disability Mentoring day.
“DMD is held on the third Wednesday of October each year. DMD promotes career development for students and jobseekers with disabilities through hands-on career exploration, on-site job shadowing, and ongoing mentoring leading to internship and employment opportunities.” (source)
So friends, DMD is kind of wonderful and super important and I’m thrilled to let you know that I will be participating in an event that involves my most favorite retailer on all the planet…GOODWILL INDUSTRIES New York/ New Jersey!!!
Goodwill NY/NJ in conjunction with the New York City Mayor’s Office for People with Disabilities contacted me to participate in their Disability Mentoring Day Fashion Show on Tuesday October 11th at the East Harlem Goodwill Industries Store. I am styling 3 models with visible and non-visible disabilities for varying professional looks all sourced from a Goodwill store.
William J. Forrester, President and CEO of NY/ NJ Goodwill says, “Employees with disabilities are among the most skilled and dedicated workers. They have higher rates of retention, which reduces a company’s hiring and training costs. And employers can leverage tax benefits from hiring people with disabilities, attracting a broader customer base for their goods and services. At the same time, they are demonstrating their commitment to corporate social responsibility.” (From DMD Fashion Show Press Release)
The bloggers participating are: ME!; Kimberlee of I Have a Degree in This!; Robin of Thrifty Vintage Chic, and Patrice of Looking Fly on a Dime.
I got to meet my first model yesterday and we had THE BEST TIME pulling from the mammoth 3 floor East Harlem Goodwill. THANK YOU AGAIN GOODWILL EAST HARLEM! You guys are the best best best! I had zero time to take pictures but I promise to take loads of pics of this gem of a store at my next pull and at the DMD Fashion Show.
Friends I am so thrilled to be participating! It’s been such a great experience for such a wonderful initiative and I can’t wait to share more with you!
