On Thanksgiving, Don’t Forget Yourself

On Thanksgiving every year I am profoundly grateful for my amazing family and friends, and the many many MANY wonderful things I have in my life, but if I’m super honest I have yet to be thankful for myself. So when Michelle thought of the Thanksgiving theme of expressing gratitude for ourselves it was a “a ha” moment for me.

This Thanksgiving theme called for 5 things about ME that I am grateful for and because we tend to be especially hard critics when it comes to our appearance Michelle thought it a good place to start.

1) I am grateful for my hands-I have my grandmother’s hands and they are long and slender with strong nails to paint fun colors.

2) I am grateful for my legs-I walk a lot and love to run and the blessing of having two legs that are strong is something I take for granted every single day.

3) I am grateful for the mole over my lips-I know this is a little random and literally a spec on my face but I used to really hate it. When I was an itty bitty girl I was completely teased because I had this mole and I have to thank Cindy Crawford in a big way because she completely changed all their minds (and mine!) in junior high. Now, I am convinced I would not recognize my face without this little guy.

4) I am grateful for my lips-I actually didn’t realize I have this pretty awesome pucker until maybe 4 years ago. They are pink and full and sexy and I don’t know why it took me so long to notice them.

5) LASTLY I am grateful that when I look in the mirror I see my family- I love that I have my mom’s eyes and my dad’s lips and if I’d ever like to visualize myself as a boy I just have to look at my brother we look so so alike. Having such a close resemblance to all of them really makes me feel my features have a wonderful history.

So this Thanksgiving thanks to Michelle I will not forget myself! And friends keep yourself in mind too when listing your litany of reasons to be thankful-I think it’s an important lesson learned for me. I need to show myself a little more love and be thankful.

Great points, especially the last one, seeing your family in your face… Such a profound idea. 🙂 I’m so glad people point out how much we look alike with my Mum, I’m really proud of that. 🙂

You took some lovely pictures, and you have great legs! 😀

Your post gave me goosebumps, the good kind! It’s such a beautiful idea, to give thanks for yourself and what makes you unique. Here in Mexico we don’t celebrate Thanksgiving day, but I think we all need to make sure that everyday is Thanksgiving day. A dear friend of mine is battling lymphatic cancer and that’s exactly what he told me, that every day for him is something to say ‘thanks’ for. It made me think a lot. Your post resonated in me because of that. You are beautiful Jamillah, thanks for sharing this gratitude with us. I’m grateful for knowing you and for your blog :)) xx

You are rad. This is a beautiful post, and you are beautiful. Also can I say I’m a little jealous of your inheritance of strong nails. I got my mom’s nails, which are very soft and they bend and break easily, so I’ve never been able to grow them out much. And I’ve developed a horrible habit over the years of biting them, so I never really indulge in trying to paint them any more. (I’ve never even had a proper manicure!) BUT I inherited many other awesome qualities from my parents which I am super thankful for, so I’m going to put that one aside.

YOU’RE RAD!!! And I have a friend who had this tedious nail biting problemo too…she used something to deter her from biting but I can’t remember what. And helllooooo you totally inherited your families entrepreneurial good 😉

I’ve heard of people doing various spicy or bad-tasting things on their nails. But I don’t know if that would stop me, as I don’t just bite them but pick at them too with my hands. :/

But yes, I have lots of entrepreneurial qualities which were definitely inherited or learned from family. Also, my crazy grey hair which I love and makes me unique is also thanks to both parents going grey early too!

First of all I want to say wonderful blog! I had a quick question that I’d like to ask if you don’t mind. I was curious to find out how you center yourself and clear your thoughts before writing. I’ve had a difficult time clearing my thoughts in getting my thoughts out. I do take pleasure in writing however it just seems like the first 10 to 15 minutes are wasted simply just trying to figure out how to begin. Any ideas or tips? Many thanks!
