Chances are if you’re reading this you noticed some of your favorite sites were not available yesterday or had some form of blackout. These sites were participating in an internet protest to draw attention to the proposed bills in congress SOPA and PIPA.
I don’t like to get political on this blog but I’d like to say I have a deep deep love of the internet and all the creativity, opportunity, sharing and general wonderfulness that goes on and can be created on the amazing worldwide web.
The SOPA/PIPA blackouts that went across the web yesterday have really just inspired me of the power of a platform that is as open as the internet that allows voices to be heard.
TAKE A LOOK AT A DIFFERENCE A DAY MAKES!
By the way that is now OUTDATED. According to prorebulica it is now 63 supporters and 122 opponents (as of 9:30pm EST 1.19.2012).
MORE than 7 million signatures collected by Google for online petition to congress.
Kind of amazing right?!?!?! I encourage you to read about the bill and know exactly what it’s about by visiting the Library of Congress site right HERE. I am actually super pro artists’ rights and copyright holders’ rights and I do think it is important to protect creative works, but the wording of this bill is pretty scary to me and I really do encourage you to read it. It’s really the best way to know it.
Also an interesting read is this stream of commentary from our congress; from voicing concern, to dissent, to approval. See what your elected officials are saying and if they’re not saying anything why not ask them?
Looks like Congressional staffs were just as annoyed as the rest of us when Wikipedia was down for a day.

Kyoto Maiko participated in this. For 24 hours, I put up a SOPA seizure mock up image and this video:

Fantastic the impact the blackouts have had on changing people’s minds, at the end of the day you don’t want to mess with huge companies like google and apple.
