Fall Into Good Habits: No Expectations

Hi friends! In this Fall Into Good Habits, I want to share some advice that really changed my life. I went to an event a couple of years ago where the inspiring Lissa Rankin spoke on getting out of your own way and living life fearlessly and she said the above words to us.

Now what does “do your best and release expectation” mean? It means try not to be focused on the outcome…make your goals the process.

Investing your time and energy and doing your best at something is really the only thing we have control over, so make that your goal. Success and failure are not things that just magically happen to us….succeeding and failing is a result that happens from trying. So really trying is the achievement.

So instead of your goal being” I’m going to lose 10lbs”, say, “I’m going to eat better” and then do your very best to do that! Instead of saying, “I’m going to be a published author,” say “I’m going to write my novel” and do your very best to do that.

I know it’s pretty impossible to not feel disappointed when we try so hard and fail, but having only the outcomes in mind I find really stifles our ability to do our best and it clouds your mind to what is your best.

So friends, just give it a try…”do your best and release expectation.”

Interesting. At weight watchers they tell us to make our goals specific. For instance a goal weight, but also three ways to get there ie keeping track of what you eat, walking three days a week, noticing fullness. Often we get to our goals in small steps, not giant leaps. I like your advice!

These are great words to live by–if only I can live up to those words. Basically, it’s a bit easier said than done, but it’s worth it to at least try. Thanks for the inspirational post, Jamillah!
