I’m sure you know about Asos and all its glory. Their fashion is inspiring, wearable, current and (holy moly!) even affordable…and as an aside, I’ve had some issues with delivery before they had a U.S. site and let me tell you their customer service is excellent-returns are easy and they are incredibly responsive.
But I will give you 2 more reasons to love Asos:
1) Asos Africa
I stumbled on on the Asos Africa Blanket Cape featured below (click any image to buy) a few months ago and I was intrigued as there are no details on the item’s origin and I was curious to whether Asos was participating in some do-gooding wonderfulness.
AND THEY ARE! Asos Africa collection is not only gorgeous it IS all made ethically by a beautiful grassroots organization called Soko.
From the Soko Site: “SOKO Kenya is a clothing production workshop for the export market that aims to create sustainable, fair employment and offer training and skills to some of Kenya’s poorest people.”
Soko has a few other partners and you can learn about them on their website. The Asos Africa collection is all on sale at the moment since Spring/Summer collection 2011 is going live March 21st…YAAAY! I CAN NOT WAIT!!!
2) Made Jewelry Collection
So unlike the Asos Africa Collection these beauties had a little story in their product description:
“All made products are designed by influential designers, then sourced and created within disadvantaged communities across East Africa.
Following the principles of fair trade Made train local artisans in new skills, providing fair wages and support at every level. Via this ‘trade not aid’ ethos they can help break the cycle of poverty and empower the people who create the products.
That brand is made – by the people for the people.”
AMEN!!! Asos you warm my heart! As if I needed more reasons to shop on your site.
It was a little tricky finding all of Asos’s do-gooding on their site so I’ve made it easy peasy for you…Click HERE to shop Asos Africa and ASOS’ other social endeavors. The Made jewelry will not be in the Asos Green Room but if you type “Africa” into the search bar on the site they turn up in the search results.
I don’t think it really gets any better than this…you can own beautiful things for a reasonable price while promoting an extraordinary endeavor by a great fashion site and a beautiful cause.

This is fantastic! So many brands have co-opted African prints over the past few seasons. To see a brand that is taking the trend and actually paying homage to its roots in a very real way is inspirational.
