Good Habits: Start a Routine

benjamin franklin's schedule(Source Archive.com)

So I’ve started to think having a routine would be a very good habit. I read this post on the Good Lifer and it really really inspired me. I love the idea of having a “very considered manner”  to your day.

The above routine is from The Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin…simple and thoughtful and grounded in two questions: “What good shall I do this day?” and “What good have I done today?” Not a bad way to evaluate your day if you ask me.

I have never had a routine and I think lots of people really don’t. We have lots of distractions and are pulled away by our many juggling obligations. But even if it’s just a little routine, like asking these 2 questions above, I feel like they may bring a lot of value to how I approach my day. What do you guys think? Do you have any routines? Ever think to adopt one?

Very cool! I’ve read a little about Ben Franklin’s routine before, and I’m always inspired by the brilliant simplicity of it. For the last couple of months I’ve been working on an evening routine: I have a journal and write at least one thing I was thankful for in the day, one thing I did that was good, and one thing I could have done better. I always try to keep it positive and focus on how I can get better day by day, as opposed to dwelling on any mistakes.

I’ve been wanting to implement a morning routine but that’s been a little tougher! I always just fall back asleep if I try to think too hard. 😉

Aw, that is so super sweet. A lovely routine. I know! Now I kind of ask myself “what good will I do today” maybe not first thing in the morning, but on the way to work or something. And at the end of the night I ask myself what good did I do today?

It’s been actually a really nice practice.
